The reporter's predictable question

Dear Marriage Supporter — From time to time, I get questions from clueless reporters who ask why NOM is still active given the Supreme Court's decision in 2015 to impose gay 'marriage' on the nation. It's a predictable question, really. Many leftists thought when the Supreme Court issued their infamous Roe v Wade decision that the pro-life community would just fold up and go away once the Court "settled" the issue. They had the same expectation of pro-marriage supporters in the wake of the Obergefell ruling. They were wrong with Roe, and they are wrong with the marriage supporters in the wake of Obergefell.

Of course, the life issue is not settled, and neither is marriage. We are fighting as hard as ever to restore marriage to our laws and to protect people who believe in marriage as the union of one man and one woman from being persecuted by the government. Will you stand with us?

We’ve had an amazing string of victories this year in pursuit of our agenda to protect people of faith. Our latest victory came the other day when President Trump's administration issued a new government-wide legal directive to protect people of faith so that nobody is forced to choose between living out his or her faith and complying with the law. This is a huge win that NOM worked hard to accomplish, launching a massive grassroots movement involving petitions, phone call campaigns, videos and social media efforts.

This most recent victory is by no means our only one in recent months. Already this year we've helped roll back the Obama administration's illegal transgender bathroom rules that were imposed on the nation's public school children. We helped convince the US Supreme Court to stop the government from forcing a public school to open intimate areas of campus such as locker rooms and showers to members of the opposite sex. We highlighted the plight of numerous Christian victims of religious discrimination who've been punished for staying true to their faith, including their beliefs about marriage, which helped convince the Trump administration to stand with the victims in a major upcoming court case. And we played a key role in the confirmation of Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch, a true conservative champion in the mold of the great Antonin Scalia whom he has replaced on the Court.

Our work is producing real and tangible results, but we need to improve our financial base if we're going to be able to continue to effectively fight. We need your help.

When the Supreme Court redefined marriage in the law in 2015, we experienced a drop in major donor contributions as people read what the media wrote that the cause was lost and the fight over. This wasn't true, but it still had an effect on some people. This left us to rely more and more on the generosity of grassroots supporters, which is actually a benefit because it gets more people engaged and involved in the fight.

However, there is a level of unpredictability associated with grassroots funding, making it harder to plan longer-term initiatives.

That's why NOM has launched a major new program called the Sustaining Member program. As a Sustaining Member, we ask you to pledge a modest recurring monthly donation to support our work. We make it easy for you to give, and your support will form a key element of the backbone of our work.

Will you take this critical step to help us?

As an added incentive to giving now, your monthly pledge will be matched every month for the next year thanks to a generous $250,000 year-end matching gift opportunity made available to us by a top supporter.

What this means is that your pledge of $10 per month will result in NOM receiving $120. If you can pledge $20, we will receive $240 in matching funds. Whatever monthly pledge you make will be matched for the next year – an amazing opportunity for us!

Please act today to become a Sustaining Member of NOM. The Sustaining Member program is essential to our success, giving us the financial predictability we need to be a more effective advocate for our issues.

And remember, whether you make a one-time donation, or step up to become a Sustaining Member with a monthly pledge, your gift will be matched dollar for dollar, giving us twice the support we'd otherwise receive and helping us to capitalize on the momentum that we have on our side.

Thank you for your help!

Keep up the momentum

Dear Marriage Supporter — You'll never know about it from the mainstream media, but NOM is on a real roll, with big victories in hand already and more on the horizon.

Our latest victory came the other day when President Trump's administration issued a new government-wide legal directive to protect people of faith so that nobody is forced to choose between living out his or her faith and complying with the law. This is a very big win for all Americans who revere the truth of marriage as the union of one man and one woman.

The media wants to bury the fact that our work is producing real and tangible results. Please help us keep up our momentum by making a tax deductible donation supporting NOM.

For many months, NOM been urging President Trump to forcefully protect the religious liberty rights of marriage supporters. The directive issued by the Department of Justice to all federal agencies and departments is a big step in that direction, and makes it clear that government officials should not take adverse actions against any American for refusing to abandon support for traditional marriage or for declining to participate in gay 'marriage' ceremonies.

Now we must act aggressively to capitalize on our momentum by encouraging President Trump to give the new directive further force of law by issuing a formal Executive Order.

Can we count on your help to do so with a generous tax deductible donation?

As a reminder, your donation to NOM will be matched dollar for dollar as a result of a generous $250,000 year-end matching gift opportunity made available to us by a top supporter.

This is an amazing opportunity, doubling the effectiveness of your donation. Your tax deductible gift of $25 will result in NOM receiving $50, while your donation of $50 will mean NOM receives $100!

And on top of matching your one-time donation, if you are able to pledge to make a modest monthly gift of any amount you choose, you'll become a Sustaining Member of NOM and your monthly pledge will be matched dollar for dollar for an entire year! Your pledge of $15 per month will result in NOM receiving $180 thanks to this incredible year-end matching gift offer.

Whether you would prefer to make a one-time tax deductible donation, or become a Sustaining Member with a monthly pledge, please act today. Your gift will be matched dollar for dollar, giving us twice the support we'd otherwise receive and helping us to capitalize on the momentum that we have on our side.

Thank you for your help!

A big victory in hand...more on the horizon

Dear Marriage Supporter — Have you heard the great news? President Donald Trump's administration delivered a huge victory for NOM and our fight to protect religious liberty with a new government-wide legal directive to protect people of faith so that nobody is forced to choose between living out his or her faith and complying with the law. This is a very big deal, protecting supporters of marriage as the union of one man and one woman.

This latest victory shows that our work is producing real and tangible dividends, and we hope it will result in you making a tax deductible donation supporting NOM.

NOM has for months been urging President Trump to forcefully protect the religious liberty rights of marriage supporters. The directive to all federal agencies and departments is a big step in that direction, and makes it clear that government officials should not take adverse actions against any American for refusing to abandon support for traditional marriage or participate in gay 'marriage' ceremonies.

President Trump followed up his administration's action with a speech to the Values Voters Summit, pledging, "We are stopping cold the attacks on Judeo-Christian values." Now we must act aggressively to encourage President Trump to take the additional step of cementing the new directive and give it the force of law by issuing a formal Executive Order. We need your immediate help to do so.

Can we count on your help with a tax deductible donation?

And here is some important news to encourage you to give a generous gift today: your donation will be matched dollar for dollar as a result of a generous $250,000 year-end matching gift opportunity made available to us by a top supporter.

This is an amazing opportunity for us. What this means is that your donation will double in effectiveness. Your tax deductible gift of $35 will result in NOM receiving $70, while your donation of $50 will mean NOM receives $100!

Your gift will be matched dollar for dollar, giving us twice the support we'd otherwise receive.

With your support we can look forward to continuing to work with President Trump's administration to cement our religious liberty rights into law so that no American is ever penalized for standing for the truth of marriage as the union of one man and one woman. Thank you for your help.

Huge Victory From President Trump

Dear Marriage Supporter — I've got some great news: President Donald Trump's administration delivered a huge victory for NOM and our fight to protect religious liberty last week when Attorney General Jeff Sessions issued a government-wide memo directing that to the maximum extent possible, the government refrain from interfering with the right of people of faith to live out their beliefs. Said Sessions, "Except in the narrowest of circumstances, no one should be forced to choose between living out his or her faith and complying with the law."

This latest victory shows that our work is producing real and tangible dividends, and we hope it will result in you making a modest investment in supporting NOM.

The memo from Attorney General Sessions comes as a result of a May directive from President Trump to develop government-wide guidelines to protect religious liberty. NOM launched a major petition drive and produced a video that resulted in an outpouring of comments to Attorney General Sessions urging that he adopt a comprehensive approach to protecting religious liberty. Our efforts were successful! Attorney General Sessions adopted a position that Politico called, "a muscular view of religious freedom rights."

While the directive to federal agencies and departments does not specifically mention cases involving those who have been punished for refusing to abandon support for traditional marriage or participate in gay 'marriage' ceremonies, it declares:

  • Religious liberty includes the right to act and to refrain from action in accordance with religious beliefs.

  • The freedom of religion extends to persons and organizations. This should provide significant protections for Christian schools, adoption agencies and other service providers that have been punished because of their views about marriage, parenthood and human sexuality.

  • Americans do not give up their religious liberty rights when they enter the marketplace. This should provide protections to all the small business owners threatened by federal government officials over their beliefs about marriage.

  • Religious employers are permitted to hire only people whose beliefs and conduct are consistent with the employers' religious precepts. This should provide significant protections for faith-based schools and similar groups who are being pressured to hire staff entangled in same-sex 'marriages' that violate the organization's beliefs and teachings.

The Department of Justice directive was immediately condemned by LGBT extremist groups as supposedly providing a "license to discriminate" but such a notion was quickly and effectively rebuffed by the White House.

Again, this is a huge victory for NOM, and for our fight to protect religious liberty. It would not have been possible had so many people not been rallied at the grassroots level by things like our petition drive and advocacy video.

While we proudly cheer this action by the Trump Administration providing guidance, more needs to be done to provide robust protections for people of faith. We are continuing to urge President Trump to issue an Executive Order to give the guidance and directives greater force of law. Furthermore, it's essential that Congress take the step of enacting the First Amendment Defense Act to codify in statute the legal protections that are needed to ensure that, as Attorney General Sessions has declared, no American is forced to choose between living out their faith and complying with the law.

This victory with the Trump Administration is but the latest example of how effective we have been in fighting for marriage and our entire agenda. It shows that the investment in NOM by thousands of grassroots supporters is paying off!

So that we can continue to be effective advocates for restoring marriage and protecting the rights of people of faith, I'm asking you take the important step of supporting NOM's Sustaining Member program.

As a Sustaining Member, we ask you to pledge a modest recurring monthly donation to support our work. We make it easy for you to give, and your support will form a key element of the backbone of our work.

Will you take this critical step to help us?

As an added incentive to becoming a Sustaining Member now, I want to let you know that your monthly pledge will be matched every month for the next year! That's because of a generous $250,000 matching gift opportunity made available to us by a top supporter through the end of the year.

What this means is that your pledge of $10 per month will result in NOM receiving $120 thanks to this generous year-end matching program. If you can pledge $20, we will receive $240 in matching funds. Whatever monthly pledge you make will be matched for the next year – an amazing opportunity for us!

Please act today to become a Sustaining Member of NOM. The Sustaining Member program is essential to our success, forming the financial backbone of our organization.

With your support we can look forward to many more victories like this latest win! Thank you for your help.

Faithfully,

Brian S Brown

Working on multiple tracks...

Dear Marriage Supporter — NOM is hard at work pursuing our agenda, working on multiple tracks to press our issues. Right now, we've got two important legal briefs pending before the US Supreme Court, and we're working with thousands of supporters who are contacting the White House and Congressional leaders to demand action on enacting meaningful legal protections for people who believe in marriage as the union of one man and one woman. We also are developing new educational and communications tools, and preparing advertising to broaden the reach of our messages.

Frankly, I wish I could spend all of my time working to advance our agenda, but unfortunately the reality is that I must spend a lot of time raising money to support the cause. That's one of the reasons I have been emphasizing the importance of NOM's Sustaining Member program. If we are successful in recruiting enough Sustaining Members, not only will our finances become much more stable and reliable, but our team will be able to devote less time to fundraising and have more time to pursue programs that advance the cause.

As a Sustaining Member, we ask you to pledge a modest recurring monthly donation to support our work. We make it easy for you to give, and your support will form a key element of the backbone of our work. Will you take this critical step to help us?

Aside from helping provide a reliable base of financial support for NOM, there's another reason to act today: your monthly pledge will be matched every month for the next year!

Whatever monthly pledge you make will be matched for the next year – an amazing opportunity for us!.

Please act today to become a Sustaining Member of NOM. The Sustaining Member program is essential to our success, forming the financial backbone of our organization.

Thank you for everything you do to help and encourage us.

Faithfully,

Brian S Brown

PS – Becoming a Sustaining Member of NOM is not only important, it's easy. You decide what monthly pledge amount is right for you, and we'll make sure that your wishes are carried out according to your instructions. Please become a Sustaining Member today.

We're making a difference...

Dear Marriage Supporter — I'm so proud of all the NOM supporters who have taken action to contact Speaker Paul Ryan, Senate Leader Mitch McConnell and the White House to demand that our elected leaders get moving on enacting meaningful legal protections for people of faith so that they are not persecuted by government officials for their belief in marriage as the union of one man and one woman.

We're making a real difference. I've heard from high-ranking officials that NOM's members are getting through and delivering the message loud and clear.

It's that kind of commitment that has allowed us to be successful over the years. Now I am asking you to take one additional step in making sure we are successful in the future – become a Sustaining Member of NOM.

As a Sustaining Member, we ask you to pledge a modest recurring monthly donation to support our work. We make it easy for you to give, and your support will form a key element of the backbone of our work. Will you take this critical step to help us?

Here's some great news that I hope will encourage you to give: A top donor to NOM has made a $250,000 matching gift opportunity available to us through the end of the year! Not only will your initial Sustaining Member donation be matched, but every single Sustaining Member donation you make for the next year will be matched! Your pledge of $15 per month will result in NOM receiving $180 thanks to this generous year-end matching program.

Please act today by taking this additional step to become a Sustaining Member of NOM. The Sustaining Member program is essential to our success, forming the financial backbone of our organization.

Thank you for everything you do to help us continue to fight for the truth of marriage, gender and religious liberty.

Faithfully,

Brian S Brown

An amazing opportunity...

Dear Marriage Supporter — As you know, NOM has a great deal of momentum as we enter into the fall, with our tremendous victory in the GOP US Senate contest in Alabama, where we played a key role in helping elect Joy Roy Moore. We expect Moore to win the run-off election against the Democrat in December, and go on to be a champion for us in the US Senate.

In order to take advantage of our momentum and ensure that we have the resources we need going forward, today we are announcing a major new Sustaining Member campaign, asking supporters to make a modest monthly commitment to support our work. I explain more below.

In addition to our victory in the Roy Moore race in Alabama, NOM also recently filed two critical briefs in the US Supreme Court on issues of immense importance:

  • Last week we filed a brief asking the Supreme Court to review a case (Kenosha Unified School District v Whitaker) and reverse the decision of an activist appellate court that redefined "sex" to mean "gender identity" and then found that a school district was guilty of discrimination on the basis of "sex stereotyping." Their offense? They have policies that limit intimate sex-segregated school areas like showers and bathrooms to actual members of that sex. In other words, no boys in the girls' showers.

  • We filed a brief in what could be one of the most important cases in our lifetimes, Masterpiece Cakeshop v Colorado. In this case, we make a powerful argument for the right of people of faith to decline to participate in things like gay 'weddings' if doing so violates their deeply-held religious beliefs. This is an immensely important religious liberty case that impacts individuals, small businesses, pastors, churches and nonprofit groups.

Our most important objective, of course, is to restore the truth of marriage to our nation’s laws. NOM will work ceaselessly towards that objective, and we may be only one new Supreme Court justice away from being able to achieve that result. But in the meantime, a critical objective for us is to protect people of faith from being targeted for persecution, forced to participate in the lie of same-sex 'marriage' against their wishes.

For NOM to be successful in pursuing our agenda we must be able to count on a reliable source of funding month in and month out. We're not supported by billionaires and big corporations; we rely on the support of individuals like you to continue our important work.

To ensure that we have the funds we need to be successful, the Sustaining Member program we are today announcing will become a critical element of NOM's overall financial base of support. As a Sustaining Member, we ask you to pledge a modest recurring monthly donation to support our work. We make it easy for you to give, and your support will form a key element of the backbone of our work.

And I've got some great news: A top donor to NOM has made a $250,000 matching gift opportunity available to us through the end of the year! Not only will your initial Sustaining Member donation be matched, but every single Sustaining Member donation you make for the next year will be matched! Your pledge of $15 per month will result in NOM receiving $180 thanks to this generous year-end matching program. Can we count on you?

How will we use your support? In addition to our ongoing work to restore marriage and promote the truth of marriage, we have a three-part plan currently underway to protect marriage supporters:

  1. Convincing the US Supreme Court to prohibit the kind of discrimination experienced by Jack Phillips, the devout Christian owner of Masterpiece Cakeshop (and so many others like him).

  2. Urging Congress to introduce and pass the First Amendment Defense Act to codify legal protections for supporters of marriage.

  3. Urging President Trump to issue an Executive Order to protect the religious liberty rights of people of faith, including the right to live out the truth of marriage in their daily lives and at work.

As you know, NOM is also one of the leading voices in the country in support for the truth of gender. God made human beings male and female. The complementary of the two genders is one of His greatest gifts to mankind. This complementarity is also at the root of the institution of marriage, so the issues of gender and marriage are intimately intertwined. We will fight to prevent the lie of gender insanity (the so-called 'gender identity' movement) that is such the cultural rage from being mandated on Americans by the courts or the government. Our work with the Supreme Court, the Trump administration and Congress has already paid major dividends as Obama-era gender policies are beginning to be unwound. This work must continue.

So while we are thrilled at the momentum we've achieved, we are also realistic that we have a tough agenda to enact, and that we face very wealthy and powerful adversaries. It won't be easy, but we know that you and the American people are on our side. This gives us the confidence and encouragement we need to keep fighting.

Please act today by accepting our challenge to become a Sustaining Member of NOM. The Sustaining Member program is essential to our success, forming the financial backbone of our organization.

Remember, every monthly Sustaining Member contribution that you pledge for the next year will be matched, dollar for dollar, thanks to the amazing year-end Matching Gift opportunity.

I am incredibly excited about our work, and our prospects for continuing success. Thank you for making that possible with your prayers, and your ongoing financial support.

Faithfully,

Brian S Brown
