What Happened to the 100,000+ Strong Chick-fil-A Facebook Event?

Internet censorship--or vandalism?

Approximately 13 hours after deleting an online invitation from former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee asking people to show support for Chick-fil-A on Aug. 1, Facebook restored the page around midnight Tuesday.

Before it vanished, nearly one million people had shared the invitation and 100,000 had said they’d be attending after Huckabee posted it on Monday.

“Yesterday, we mistakenly blocked an event as part of our spam prevention efforts and quickly worked to rectify the mistake as soon as we were notified,” Facebook told CitizenLink today in an emailed statement. “Our policies are enforced by a team of reviewers in several offices across the globe. This team looks at hundreds of thousands of reports every week, and as you might expect, occasionally we make a mistake and block a piece of content we shouldn’t have. We have already taken steps to prevent this from happening in the future and we sincerely apologize for any convenience.”

Huckabee said that explanation was “more thorough” than the one Facebook provided him on Tuesday; the company said it was a “content” issue.

That “was remarkable to us, because the content was not offensive,” Huckabee told CitizenLink. “It was not asking anyone to do anything violent, unholy or unhealthy to anyone. It was simply expressing affirmation to the Chick-fil-A company. Interestingly, while that site was pulled down, the site that the militant homosexual groups had put up, which was Same-Sex Kiss Day to happen on Aug. 3 at Chick-fil-A restaurants, was left up.” -- CitizenLink

The restored "Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day" Facebook page is now past 200,000 individuals.

Video: What Has Happened After SSM in Massachusetts?

Kalley Yanta of the Minnesota Marriage Minute explains some of the consequences after seven years of same-sex marriage:

"Town clerks who were ordered to solemnize same-sex marriages or be fired. Catholic charities was forced to close its adoption agency as it could not abandon its teaching in order to comply with state rules requiring placing children with same-sex couples. After this man's six year old son was exposed to instruction about homosexual relationships in kindergarten, David Parker was arrested for trespassing for protesting the instruction. He spent the night in jail and was taken to court in handcuffs..."

Heteronormative Chicken?

An ex-Chick-Fil-A worker's perspective:

"...While Chick-fil-A as a corporation may have certain priorities, the local stores are each unique.  And they largely don’t care about sexual orientation in their day-to-day operations.  When a customer came up to the front counter, we never asked them to check a box for their sexual orientation or religious beliefs before serving them. We just smiled, asked them how they were feeling that day, and asked them what they wanted to eat.

... The goal of Chick-fil-A and its employees is not to be oppressive or discriminatory.  Its goal is to sell you delicious chicken, and to do so while upholding certain beliefs and principles. Yes, their corporate office may fund some programs that support traditional family models.  But there will never, EVER be a litmus test put in place banning an LGBTQ person from coming into a Chick-fil-A restaurant just like everyone else and enjoying a meal. This is the universalizing nature of good restaurant hospitality – every guest should receive equal kindness and equally good service, period.  No exceptions.

... For those who support the franchise, please think before you decide how best to show your support. The best thing you could do is give them regular business. If you really must thank someone for taking their position, please do so in person or with a personally-written letter, not a pre-formatted note or a printout that someone else did for you. Even better, show them that you really care – if the service is of good quality, leave the dining room team a tip! Tips were a huge positive energy boost for me and I’m sure they would be for current Chick-fil-A employees as well." -- The College Conservative

Marriage As a Social Justice Issue

La Shawn Barber writes in Pajamas Media:

"...So-called social justice, the impetus behind government policies like racial preferences, drives the Democratic platform. But no matter how level the proverbial playing field, individuals will always possess different levels of drive, initiative, intelligence, motivation, skill, and talent. Individuals will never have equal amounts of stuff. Equality of outcome cannot exist. We are equal where it counts in a free, pursuit-of-happiness kind of country: under the law.

One factor driving the inequality liberals claim they’re concerned about is family instability. As research and common sense have borne out, marriage benefits the whole of society, the adults who made the vows, and the products of the union — the children. An article in the New York Times making the rounds, “Two Classes, Divided by ‘I Do,’” compares and contrasts two women with several similarities and one important difference, especially where children are concerned: one has a husband and the other doesn’t.

...The largest predictor of child poverty is a single-parent household. Family instability, and not racism or bias, has created different classes of children. And since liberals are big on class warfare and social justice, they should wage war on single parenthood and make marriage — the legal union between one man and one woman — a social justice issue. In the name of human rights, strongly recommend people marry before having children. Marriage would decrease children’s risk of poverty and the social pathologies associated with growing up in a home with no father.

... The solution to reducing inequality isn’t more government, but more marriage. Although the government has no power to make people marry before having children, branding marriage a social justice issue might inspire liberals to focus less on social programs and more on that stifling, patriarchal institution called the traditional family.

Weekly Standard: Media Invented Story That Chick-fil-A is Anti-Gay

Mark Hemingway of The Weekly Standard on the lazy habit by the media of simply collapsing being pro-marriage into being anti-gay/homophobic:

"...To say that [Chick-fil-A CEO] Cathy condemned gay marriage is stunningly dishonest. And yet, Cathy's had to endure headlines such as, "Boston Mayor Blocks Chick-fil-A Franchise from City over Homophobic Attitude" -- and that headline comes from Time, which is allegedly one of the more responsible media outlets.

CNN, Time and many other news organizations owe Cathy and Chick-fil-A some serious corrections and/or clarifications. It should further cause news organizations -- particularly in the wake of ABC's absurd speculation that the Aurora killings were done by a Tea Partier and many news organizations falling for Greenpeace's intentionally deceptive campaign against Shell Oil -- to reflect on why these kinds of egregrious media errors habitually reflect left-wing political narratives."

NOM's Baker: Chick-Fil-A "Taking a Firm Position Based on Their Faith"

Charlie Butts of OneNewsNow:

In the aftermath of the company president’s declaration for traditional marriage, the National Organization for Marriage is calling on people of faith to support Chick-fil-A. At the same time, the mayor of Boston is getting roasted for his opposition to the restaurant chain.

President Dan Cathy, president and chief operating officer of the restaurant chain, recently stated in an interview with a Christian news journal that his privately owned company is "guilty as charged" of supporting what he calls "the biblical definition of the family unit." Jonathan Baker of the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) tells OneNewsNow that Chick-fil-A owners Dan and Truett Cathy are simply taking a firm position based on their faith.

"They've not done it in an objectionable fashion. They've not denigrated people. They simply shared that they are Christians, that they hold with biblical teaching on what marriage should be," Baker points out. "And frankly, they've put a lot of money where their mouth is. They're a great example for the rest of us in supporting marriage."

As Baker points out, the resulting rhetoric against the Truett family has been extremely harsh. That, he says, is why his organization is asking supporters to quietly stand with the restaurant.

Photos & Testimonials Suggest Packed Chick-fil-A's Across the Country!

We're hearing reports of packed Chick-fil-A's across the country today. NOM's Thomas Peters visited the DC Chick-fil-A foodtruck and reported packed lines the whole lunch hour:

A DC supporter who arrived later said the truck sold out of sandwiches! (She opted for chicken nuggets instead.)

A NOM supporter from Alabama sent this photo in along with this description: "I tried to eat at Chick-Fil-A today, but the Homewood, AL location was too crowded! What the photo doesn't show is the back-up behind the camera and the packed shopping center parking lot adjacent to the restaurant. Jam packed."

Meanwhile a NOM supporter from St. Louis wrote us: "I’ve never seen a fast food restaurant as busy as the Chick-Fil-A here in St. Louis today."

Let us know in the comments what it was like when you visited Chick-fil-A today! And make your plans to visit Chick-fil-A next Wendesday (August 1st) as well!

Audio: Brian Brown Talks Chick-fil-A on the Mike Huckabee Show

Our President Brian Brown was on with Gov. Mike Huckabee today talking about Chick-Fil-A and freedom!

Gov. Mike Huckabee had some words of praise and encouragement for Brian and NOM:

"Brian thank you and my thanks also to the National Organization for Marriage, a highly-respected family organization that has been willing to courageously show leadership in states where there have been ballot measures to not change something but rather to leave something alone, to simply allow us to continue in the traditional view of marriage."

Chicago Alderman, With Mayor Rahm's Support, Moves to Ban Chick-Fil-A

More city officials move against a business holding biblical views about marriage -- still think redefining marriage won't effect the rest of us?

AP

A Chicago alderman wants to kill Chick-fil-A's plans to build a restaurant in his increasingly trendy Northwest Side ward because the fast-food chain's top executive vocally opposes gay marriage.

Ald.Proco "Joe" Moreno announced this week that he will block Chick-fil-A's effort to build its second Chicago store, which would be in the Logan Square neighborhood, following company President Dan Cathy's remarks last week that he was "guilty as charged" for supporting the biblical definition of marriage as between a man and woman.

"If you are discriminating against a segment of the community, I don't want you in the 1st Ward," Moreno told the Tribune on Tuesday.

Moreno stated his position in strong terms, referring to Cathy's "bigoted, homophobic comments" in a proposed opinion page piece that an aide also sent to Tribune reporters. "Because of this man's ignorance, I will now be denying Chick-fil-A's permit to open a restaurant in the 1st Ward."

Video: Pro-SSM Maine Activists Stage S-S "Blessing Ceremony" During Gay Pride Festival

Bangor Daily News:

In some ways, it was a typical summer wedding in Maine. Vows were exchanged, lips were locked and couples danced.

“I proclaim my committment out loud to you with pride and joy for all the world to see,” brides and brides, grooms and grooms and brides and grooms said to each other Saturday in West Market Square.

The ceremony, led by two Unitarian Universalist ministers, did not include the standard promises to love and honor. It also wasn’t legal.

That was the point organizers of Bangor’s annual Pride Festival and parade wanted to make — a majority of the couples who took part in the mock wedding ceremony can’t legally marry under Maine law because they are of the same sex.

If a referendum on the ballot in November is approved by voters, same-sex couples would be able to wed.

CP: NOM, Gov. Huckabee Launch "Eat Chick-Fil-A Day" on Wednesday

The Christian Post:

Conservative radio and TV host Mike Huckabee and the National Organization for Marriage are calling on people to eat at Chick-fil-A on Wednesday to support Dan Cathy, the company's president, who is being attacked by gay activists for saying in recent interviews that he supports traditional marriage.

"Imagine if folks all across the country united together in support of heroes like Dan and Truett Cathy that stand for strengthening marriage and family!" wrote Brian Brown, president of the National Organization for Marriage, on Saturday.

In response to the boycott threats against Chick-fil-A, Mike Huckabee, who was a 2008 presidential candidate, last week called on his radio show listeners to support the Cathy family by making July 25th National Eat at Chick-fil-A Day.

Today is Eat Chick-fil-A Day! Have you visited your nearest Chick-fil-A and thanked them for being pro-marriage?

Weekly Standard: Limitations of Regnerus Study Compare Favorably to Shortcomings Found Routinely in Same-Sex Literature

Andrew Ferguson in his informative Weekly Standard article on the "revenge of the sociologists" talks about "the perils of politically incorrect academic research" and aptly sums up why the counter-attacks against the Regnerus study ultimately fall flat:

"...Whatever its faults, Regnerus’s study has unique strengths, even beyond the size and randomness of its sample, that his critics ignore altogether. His commendable attempt to include a diversity of views among his advisers is rare within the guild, where the leftism is unrelieved. So too were his willingness to immediately publish his research materials online and his pledge to make all his data digitally available this fall. Rather than a study of monochromatic and well-to-do lesbians or gay men, he managed to capture the full ethnic, socioeconomic, and geographic range of gay America. And his study is one of the first to systematically measure outcomes from the children themselves, rather than simply through the reports of their parents.

The limitations of Regnerus’s study compare favorably with the shortcomings found routinely in the same-sex literature. It does no credit to the guild that researchers have choked on Regnerus’s paper while happily swallowing dozens of faulty studies over the last 20 years—because, you can’t help but think, those studies were taken as confirming the “no difference” dogma. “If the Regnerus study is to be thrown out,” wrote the Canadian family economist Douglas Allen in a statement supporting Regnerus, “then practically everything else [in the literature] has to go with it.”

Illinois Republicans Introduce Legislation Protecting Marriage

The latest out of Illinois:

With the recent lawsuits filed in the Circuit Court of Cook County challenging the prohibition of same-sex marriage in the Illinois Marriage and Dissolution of Marriage Act, State Representatives David Reis (R-Ste. Marie) is co-sponsoring a resolution which upholds the state’s ban on same-sex marriage.

“It is time for the General Assembly to reaffirm their support for Illinois laws reserving the institution of marriage between one man and one woman,” Rep. Reis said.  “The people I represent are adamantly opposed to same-sex marriage and troubled by our Attorney General’s recent dereliction of duty by not defending our state’s policy on marriage.” -- PressMentor

Three Easy Steps to Protect Marriage Today!

Email Header Image

Dear Marriage Supporter,

Below are three important (and easy!) steps that I'm asking you to take to defend marriage today. It will only take a few minutes of your time, and when you're finished, please forward this message on to your friends. Together we're making a difference!

STEP ONE: National Eat at Chick-fil-A Days!

Thanks to the many of you who have enthusiastically responded to my call to stand up and support Dan and Truett Cathy. There are a number of groups joining together in the effort to thank the Cathy family for their courage and grace under fire.

With Mike Huckabee calling on the listeners of his show to go out and eat at Chick-fil-A on Wednesday, August 1, we're extending our effort to include both this Wednesday and next! So, please head out to your local Chick-fil-A restaurant this Wednesday, the 25th, and next Wednesday, the 1st, and let the manager know that you're there to thank the Cathy family for their bravery and for all their good work!

STEP TWO: Send a message to the out-of-control Mayor of Boston

"You don't belong here."

That's what Boston's mayor, Thomas Menino, has told Dan Cathy and Chick-fil-A: "You don't belong in Boston."

The mayor's reasoning? Because Boston is "an open city… a city that's at the forefront of inclusion."

The hypocrisy is ludicrous.

Menino, of course, is an outspoken promoter of same-sex marriage, just another out-of-touch politician ignorant of the fact that the American people have consistently rejected same-sex marriage at the ballot box. Luckily for Mr. Menino, the people of Massachusetts haven't been allowed to vote on marriage; but they will be allowed to vote on him—and if he isn't nervous, he probably should be.

What kind of mayor denies a large and flourishing company from settling in his city, just because that company's president disagrees with the mayor's own radical same-sex marriage agenda? A mayor who cares neither for his constituents or the Constitution!

Menino has allowed his own bias to cloud his judgment, and he is sending a very poor signal to any prospective business that doesn't want politicians' meddling for the sake of scoring points with their wealthy donors and lobbyists. Besides that, Menino has insulted faith-based business owners and the majority of Americans who don't want to be forced to compromise their moral integrity to serve the whims of the same-sex marriage camp.

Join me in letting Mayor Menino know that his bullying of Chick-fil-A is out of keeping with his Office as Mayor!

Click here to send your own message to Mayor Menino to voice your outrage at his unjust attacks on Mr. Cathy and Chick-fil-A. I hope you'll send a message right away—it only takes a minute! The mayor needs to know how out of touch he is with the majority of voters who recognize marriage as the unique and sacred union of one man and one woman, and that he cannot get away with bullying those who won't step in line with his own radical agenda.

STEP THREE: Tell Congress to Stand Firm on DOMA

Last Thursday, the United States House of Representatives voted 247-166 to adopt the King Amendment, which prohibits the use of Department of Defense funds to violate the Defense of Marriage Act.

This was a very important vote, halting at least one part of the continuous effort by the White House and certain members of the Legislature to chip away at DOMA piece by piece. Over the past year, a continuous battle against DOMA has been building at the highest levels of the Obama administration's Defense Department, producing new Navy "sensitivity guidelines" requiring chaplains to officiate at same-sex marriage ceremonies and a Department of Defense memo requiring that all military facilities be available for same-sex weddings.

We've put together an action center where you can send a customized message to your own Representatives and Senators, either to thank them for standing firm in support of DOMA or urging them to respect the voice of the American people in the future with respect to this important issue. A thank you message will also be sent to Rep. Steve King for his leadership in passing the amendment. Click here to send your important message to Congress today!

I hope you will take some time out today to accomplish these quick action steps. Thanks again for all you are doing to protect marriage!
