Breaking: Pope Francis in First US Speech Gives Ringing Defense of Religious Freedom

Dear Marriage Supporter,

The commentators who tried to tell us that Pope Francis would steer clear of mentioning marriage and religious freedom in his time in the US were dead wrong.

Just minutes ago, in his first speech in the United States Pope Francis spoke of his desire to "celebrate and support the institutions of marriage and the family at this, a critical moment in the history of our civilization."

He then went on to directly address the president on religious liberty. He said religious freedom, "remains one of America's most precious possessions. And, as my brothers, the United States Bishops, have reminded us, all are called to be vigilant, precisely as good citizens, to preserve and defend that freedom from everything that would threaten or compromise it."

These are strong words and so encouraging to those of us standing on the front lines of defending marriage and religious liberty. We will keep updating you as I will be traveling between Philadelphia at the World Meeting of Families this week for the Papal Visit.
