U.S. Bishops Launch National Bulletin Insert on Marriage and the Supreme Court

Catholic Bishops working actively to better educate and inform Catholics about their church's teachings on marriage and family. This is being shared with all American bishops for distribution in May and June.

You can download a PDF of the bulletin insert here.

Stained GlassHere are some of the messages it promotes:

Be a witness for the truth of marriage in word and action. Take advantage of opportunities to speak about marriage’s unique meaning in conversation with friends, family, neighbors or co-workers. Share the truth in love.

Everyone has inviolable dignity and deserves love and respect. There are many ways to protect the basic human rights of all, but redefining marriage serves no one’s rights, least of all those of children.

What is marriage? Marriage is the permanent and exclusive union of one man and one woman, for the good of the spouses and for the procreation and education of children. One man, one woman—for life. (See Second Vatican Council, Gaudium et Spes, no. 48).

The difference is the difference. Men and women matter. They are equal but different. Sexual difference is essential to marriage.

Mothers and fathers matter. They aren’t interchangeable. Every child has a basic, natural right to come from and be raised in the loving marital union of his or her own father and mother.

Protecting marriage matters to everyone. It’s Catholic social teaching 101: pro-woman, pro-man, pro-child. Redefining marriage in the law says many false things: women – mothers – are dispensable; men – fathers – are dispensable; what adults want trumps what a child deserves and has a basic right to. Abp. Cordileone: SSM is "Serious Injustice"

CatholicWorldNews:

Archbishop CordileoneArchbishop Salvatore Cordileone of San Francisco decried same-sex marriage as a “serious injustice” after Rhode Island became the tenth state to legalize the practice.

“The meaning of marriage cannot be redefined, because its meaning lies in our very nature,” said the prelate, who serves as chairman of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Subcommittee for the Promotion and Defense of Marriage. “Therefore, regardless of what law is enacted, marriage remains the union of one man and one woman – by the very design of nature, it cannot be otherwise.”

“We cannot claim to have a just society if we do not look out for the most vulnerable among us: children,” he added. “That means preserving in the law the principle that every child deserves a mother and father united in marriage.”

“Femen” Activists Disrupt Event, Assault Archbishop

Here is the story from globalpost:

The four protesters leapt out of their seats at a debate on blasphemy and freedom of expression held at the Brussels' Free University (ULB) campus Tuesday evening, baring their breasts and squirting water at Archbishop Andre Leonard as they accused him of homophobia.

The story notes:

[T]he archbishop himself remained composed and apparently at prayer throughout.

The women used water bottles made for blessed holy water, shaped like Catholic statues of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The picture to the left shows Archbishop Leonard picking up and kissing one of the bottles following the disruption.

Bishop Tobin: Redefining Marriage in Rhode Island a "Grave Risk"

Rhode Island's Senate Judiciary Committee is set to vote on several same-sex marriage bills Tuesday, and Bishop Thomas J. Tobin of the Diocese of Providence is speaking out:

"As the Rhode Island Senate prepares to take action on legislation that would seek to legitimize 'same-sex marriage,' I once again urge members of the Senate to stand strong in resisting this immoral and unnecessary proposition and to defend marriage and family as traditionally defined. We should be very clear about this: it is only with grave risk to our spiritual well-being and the common good of our society that we dare to redefine what God himself has created. My prayer is that the senators will have all the wisdom and courage they need to do the right thing in this moment of decision."

We need the people of Rhode Island to TAKE ACTION today!

Call and email your state senators and urge them to protect marriage for the next generation.

U.S. Bishops Asked Catholics to Fast for the March for Marriage

CatholicWorldNews:

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has asked Catholics to offer their fasting and abstinence from meat on March 22 “for all who will march in the March for Marriage on Tuesday, or join spiritually from a distance, that they may witness boldly to the truth of marriage as the union of one man and one woman.”

Quoting the future Pope Francis, a USCCB flyer added that “at stake is the identity and survival of the family: father, mother and children. At stake are the lives of children who will be discriminated against in advance, and deprived of their human development given by a father and a mother and willed by God.”

NOM's Peters: March for Marriage "an opportunity to show the positive face of the pro-marriage movement"

Catholic San Francisco:

San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore J. Cordileone will speak on the importance of marriage, particularly to children, at the March for Marriage in Washington, D.C., March 26, the date of the U.S. Supreme Court hearing on California’s Proposition 8.

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops sent letters to all American dioceses asking them to promote participation in the March for Marriage. The event is organized by the National Organization for Marriage, and is supported by a coalition of 30 organizations including Focus on the Family and the Family Research Council, said Thomas Peters, one of the organizers.

“It’s an opportunity to show the positive face of the pro-marriage movement and to call on the Supreme Court to respect the seven million Californians who voted to enact Prop. 8 in 2008,” Peters said.

USCCB Marriage Blog: Five Reasons to Participate in the March for Marriage

The Marriage Unique for a Reason blog run by the U.S. Catholic Bishops gives five reasons Catholics should support the March for Marriage -- here's the first reason:

1. When Pope Francis was archbishop of Buenos Aires, he encouraged the Catholic faithful to march for marriage. The year was 2010 and the Argentinean legislature was debating whether or not to redefine marriage. According to Zenit news, then-Cardinal Bergoglio “appealed to parish priests, rectors and chaplains of churches to facilitate the participation of the faithful” in a planned march and demonstration against redefining marriage. The marchers united under the motto “We want a mommy and daddy for our children” and Cardinal Bergoglio encouraged them to keep the tone positive. Read more about Pope Francis’ defense of marriage and family during his time in Buenos Aires.

Pope Francis: A Stalwart Advocate of Marriage and Children!

National Organization for Marriage

Friends —

As you have no doubt heard, the Catholic Church has a new Pope! Pope Francis (formerly Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio of Argentina) is a humble man and a dedicated servant to the poor. He is also an outspoken advocate for God’s design for marriage as the union of one man and one woman.

But don't take my word for it. Read what Pope Francis said when a bill to redefine marriage was proposed in Argentina:

"Let's not be naive, we're not talking about a simple political battle; it is a destructive pretension against the plan of God. We are not talking about a mere bill, but rather a machination of the Father of Lies that seeks to confuse and deceive the children of God."

He has also said:

"At stake is the identity and survival of the family: father, mother and children. At stake are the lives of many children who will be discriminated against in advance, and deprived of their human development given by a father and a mother and willed by God. At stake is the total rejection of God's law engraved in our hearts."

I believe Pope Francis will follow in the steps of Pope Benedict XVI and provide a consistent and strong voice in support of marriage and children. Our prayers go out to him as he leads the world's over 1 billion Catholics in the weeks, months, and years ahead.

NOM Hails U.S. Bishops' Mobilization to Promote March for Marriage at "Decisive Time"

"We applaud the U.S. Catholic Bishops for leading by example. Now is the time for people of all faiths to commit to marching for marriage!" — Brian Brown, NOM president —

National Organization for Marriage

Washington, D.C. — Brian Brown, President of the National Organization for Marriage, welcomed a new letter sent to every Catholic bishop in America encouraging them to support and promote the March for Marriage (http://www.marriagemarch.org/) on March 26 in Washington, DC. The letter was sent by Bishop Kevin Rhoades, Chairman of the USCCB's Committee on Laity, Marriage, Family Life and Youth, and by Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone, Chairman of the Subcommittee for the Promotion and Defense of Marriage. The letter reads in part:

"We are grateful for this opportunity to express support for the Marriage March and to encourage participation in this event. We realize that the march will occur during the solemn days of Holy Week, but we ask that you consider promoting this event in your diocese and parishes and encourage participation where possible.

The march will be a significant opportunity to promote and defend marriage and the good of our nation, to pray for our Supreme Court justices, and to stand in solidarity with people of good will. It also complements well the bishops’ Call to Prayer for Life, Marriage, and Religious Liberty (http://www.usccb.org/life-marriage-liberty) that was approved last November. This is a decisive time for marriage in our country. We are deeply grateful for any support you can offer for this march."

"We welcome the active participation and support of the Catholic Church in the march," said Brown. "Our coalition on behalf of marriage includes a great many people and groups representing a diverse array of faith traditions, including evangelicals, Baptists, Presbyterians, and members of the Church of God in Christ and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. We welcome people of every faith --and no faith at all-- to join us in protecting the unique bond of marriage, the only institution that provides children with the mother and father they deserve. Those who believe in the protection of religious liberty as we do are also wise to stand strong for marriage at this decisive time."

Previous to this letter circulating, the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, which is under the leadership of Archbishop Charles Chaput, announced they would be sponsoring five buses to the March for Marriage. Brown added: "We expect and welcome more pledges of participation from other Catholic dioceses on the east coast and across the country. Now is the time for Catholics and people of all faiths to commit to marching for marriage!"

The entire letter of Bishop Rhoades and Archbishop Cordileone can be read on the USCCB website here.

They have many additional resources available at their website dedicated to the protection of marriage: Marriage, Unique for a Reason here.

Hundreds of Latino Catholics Gather in Defense of Marriage in Illinois

The Beacon News:

Several hundred Hispanic Catholics withstood the chill rain and wind to walk and pray in defense of heterosexual marriage Monday evening.

The Processional and Prayer in Defense of Marriage at Sacred Heart Church was organized by Bishop David Malloy, who led the parishioners in prayer, and the Diocese of Rockford in response to same-sex marriage legislation working its way through the Illinois General Assembly.

“The bishop asked for this (church) specifically to encourage the Hispanic community to contact their legislators to encourage them to preserve marriage and to vote ‘no’ on same-sex marriage, but to do so in the context of prayer and respect for all,” said Penny Wiegert, director of communication for the diocese.

The fight to protect marriage in Illinois has moved over to the House, where we have a better chance of defeating the effort to redefine it! Please contact your representative in Springfield today!

Breaking News: Pope Benedict XVI to Resign at End of Month, Citing Age, Health

Pope Benedict has been a stalwart defender of the institutions of marriage and family:

In a surprise announcement, Pope Benedict XVI said today that he will resign at the end of the month. The pope said that due to the increased weakness accompanying his advanced age - he is 85 - he feels that he is unable to carry out the duties of his office.

"After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths due to an advanced age are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry," he said in a statement to a meeting of Vatican cardinals.

"I am well aware that this ministry, due to its essential spiritual nature, must be carried out not only by words and deeds but no less with prayer and suffering.

"However, in today's world, subject to so many rapid changes and shaken by questions of deep relevance for the life of faith, in order to govern the barque of Saint Peter and proclaim the Gospel, both strength of mind and body are necessary, strength which in the last few months, has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognize my incapacity to adequately fulfill the ministry entrusted to me."

He is reportedly the first pope to resign in six centuries.

The pope is considered one of the strongest allies of the pro-life and pro-family movements, frequently issuing statements defending the natural family and the right to life from conception until natural death.

He was elected to the papacy on April 19, 2005. (LifeSiteNews)

Weigel on Pope Benedict's Child-Centered Marriage Speech

George Weigel reflects on how Pope Benedict sees marriage as a child-centered institution:

"The biggest losers [when marriage is redefined], though, are children, the pope argued. If children are simply a lifestyle choice in a “family” that is nothing other than a willed arrangement for mutual convenience, children lose their rightful place and their rightful dignity. Citing the chief rabbi of France, Gilles Bernheim, Benedict argued that children are, in this bizarre new world, no longer the subject of rights. Rather, “the child has become an object to which people have a right and which they have a right to obtain.” The freedom to be creative, which finds its most awesome expression in procreation, has been reduced to the freedom to create myself, however I imagine myself to be.

The marriage debate is thus about more than the legal definition of marriage, although that is serious enough. It’s a debate about whether there are any givens in the human condition, or whether willfulness and self-assertion trump reality at every point. If they do, what happens to democracies built on self-evident truths?" (First Things)

UK Catholic Church Distributes 1 Million Pro-Marriage Postcards at Sunday Masses

The UK Catholic Herald:

The Archbishop of Southwark, the Most Rev Peter Smith, spoke of a desire to “mobilise” opposition in the Church.

He urged them to capitalize on the decision by all three main party leaders to allow free votes on the matter and increase pressure on their local MPs to halt such a “fundamental change in the law”.

A million postcards, designed for Catholics to complete and send to their MP asking them to vote against the Government’s plan, were distributed at masses over the weekend.

The issue to due to come up for a vote in the Commons as early as February 5.

... In a letter on behalf of bishops, Archbishop Smith, the second most senior active Catholic cleric in England and Wales, told priests: “The time to act is now.”

U.S. Bishops File Supreme Court Briefs Supporting DOMA, Proposition 8

Marriage Unique For a Reason Blog:

WASHINGTON—The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops on January 29 filed amicus briefs in the United States Supreme Court in support of the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and California’s Proposition 8, both of which  confirm the definition of marriage as the union of one man and one woman.
.... Urging the Court to uphold DOMA the USCCB brief in United States v. Windsor says that “there is no fundamental right to marry a person of the same sex.” The brief also states that “as defined by courts ‘sexual orientation’ is not a classification that should trigger heightened scrutiny,” such as race or ethnicity would.

It added that “civil recognition of same-sex relationships is not deeply rooted in the Nation’s history and tradition—quite the opposite is true. Nor can the treatment of such relationships as marriages be said to be implicit in the concept of ordered liberty, such that neither liberty nor justice would exist if they were sacrificed.”

USCCB argued that previous Supreme Court decisions “describing marriage as a fundamental right plainly contemplate the union of one man and one woman.”

The USCCB also cautioned that a decision invalidating DOMA “would have adverse consequences in other areas of law.”

... In a separate brief filed in Hollingsworth v Perry urging the Court to uphold Proposition 8, the USCCB states that there are many reasons why the state may reasonably support and encourage marriage, understood as the union of one man and one woman, as distinguished from other relationships. Government support for marriage, so understood, is “recognizing the unique capacity of opposite-sex couples to procreate” and “the unique value to children of being raised by their mother and father together.”
