Nobody else seems to be paying attention yet but:

Chile’s President Sebastian Pinera has announced that he will forward to parliament a bill that would grant both heterosexual and homosexual couples the ability to form civil unions, granting them many of the same rights as marriage.

Pinera announced his intentions in an interview published Saturday by daily El Mercurio. --LGBTQ Nation

Giving all couples the legal benefits and privileges of motherhood, in essence neutralizes the special support offered to motherhood for the 9 months of pregnancy/sacrifice women go through to engender usually one single child, hopefully to live to maturity.

Even if same-gender couples (of all types) can form a relationship, and even a civil "family" cell, if you want to call it that, it will never compare to motherhood. If they use a surrogate mom, or adopt. It still doesn't even start to compare.

Offering the civil benefits of motherhood to all couples, whether of homosexual behavior or not, decreases the relative support for motherhood. In essence, motherhood will not be supported in a special way, though it needs it more and more. I can't imagine Latin-Americans are going to just sit there and not voice their special support for motherhood. Latin-Americans are, in general, maternalistic societies, as opposed to the USA - which is paternalistic.
