Marriage Supporter — Hope and change is just 72 hours away. That’s when Donald J. Trump will be inaugurated the 45th President of the United States.
We at NOM have high hopes in the next administration. While nobody can be certain how Mr. Trump will govern as president — after all, he’s a dealmaker and has never held elective office — we do know that he has made some strong promises that he intends to keep.
First, Mr. Trump has promised to appoint constitutionalists to the US Supreme Court, justices who believe the constitution means what it says and does not change and expand to suit the political mood of the day. These are justices in the mold of the late Antonin Scalia. And judges who share Justice Scalia’s legal philosophy will inevitably vote to reverse the illegitimate, anti-constitutional ruling redefining marriage in the terrible Obergefell decision of 2015.
Given this, we have real hope that Obergefell can be reversed and marriage can be restored to our nation’s laws during the first Trump term.
Second, Mr. Trump has promised to sign the critically-important First Amendment Defense Act into law, protecting the rights of supporters of marriage to live out their views at work and in their daily lives. This legislation must become a top priority of the new Congress.
And third, we are confident that the Trump administration will move swiftly to reverse the dangerous, outrageous push by the Obama team to redefine gender so that men can occupy intimate areas reserved for girls and women, including bathrooms, showers and locker rooms.
But to make sure that these things actually happen, NOM must be on duty to encourage and support President Trump and to hold Congresses’ feet to the fire. That is why we need your immediate financial assistance.
The first 100 days of the Trump administration will be critical. This is the time when priorities can be advanced and where issues can be defined. It’s essential that marriage, gender and religious liberty be prominent in the national conversation during these first 100 days.
Please help NOM be in a position to put maximum focus and attention on our issues as the Trump administration takes office. We’ve never been in a better position to advance policies that we care deeply about, and we must move forward aggressively to make sure our issues advance.
