Support HR 5053 to Stop IRS Abuses

Dear Marriage Supporter,

Important legislation inspired by the illegal leak of NOM's confidential donor information to our chief political opponent by the IRS is making its way through Congress. It has passed the House of Representatives and now is moving to the Senate. HR 5053, the Preventing IRS Abuse and Protecting Free Speech Act authored by Rep. Peter Roskam (R-IL), would prohibit the IRS from collecting individual donor information from nonprofit entities, including NOM. We urge you to contact your federal Senators urging them to support this critical legislation. You can find information on how to contact the Senate here.

In March 2012, NOM's confidential tax return and donor information was published by our main political rival, the grossly misnamed Human Rights Campaign (HRC). HRC had been unsuccessfully seeking NOM's confidential donor information for years, but that information is not public. NOM conducted a high-level investigation and determined that the confidential donor information published by the HRC was leaked by the IRS itself. At the time of the illegal action by IRS officials, the head of the HRC was serving as a national co-chairman of President Obama's reelection campaign. The IRS denied that they leaked the information — going so far as to claim that NOM must have given the HRC our confidential tax information and list of top donors — but after NOM filed a federal lawsuit, the tax agency was forced to admit wrongdoing and paid NOM $50,000 in damages.

HR 5053 would stop future abuses of this sort by prohibiting the IRS from gaining access to confidential donor information of individuals who contribute to nonprofit organizations.

Join Us at the March for Marriage

The March for Marriage is a critical event designed to serve as a rallying point to protest the illegitimate and anti-constitutional ruling of the US Supreme Court to redefine marriage in the law. We are also marching to protest President Obama's illegal attempts to redefine gender, and risk the privacy and safety of girls and women in the process. And we will use this occasion to demand that Congress pass the First Amendment Defense Act, critical legislation needed to protect people who support marriage from being persecuted by the government for maintaining these beliefs.

All the information you need about the March for Marriage is available here.

As you know, putting on an event of this magnitude is expensive. We have devoted all our available financial resources to the March, but are still $15,000 short of what we need to pay the bills. Please make an immediate financial contribution of $35, $50, $100, $250, $500 or even $1,000 or more to help us make ends meet.

Faithfully,

Brian S Brown
