The new president of the Southern Baptist Convention said Wednesday that the denomination will continue defending marriage despite cultural pressure. Ronnie Floyd, the Southern Baptist Convention's newly-elected leader, said the Southern Baptist Convention will not compromise its stance on marriage:
“We stand strong on what the Scripture says about marriage between a man and a woman. At the same time we do know that we have this issue facing our culture,” Floyd said. “But due to the situation today, we must hold the word of God in one hand and the love of God in the other, and have compassion and love to bring people into the fellowship.”
The Southern Baptist Convention is the largest Protestant denomination in the nation, with 15.7 million members, according to a recent report by the denomination’s publishing arm, Lifeway Christian Resources.
Floyd's words on showing love to all people reflect the attitudes of so many marriage champions. The media ignores the loving sentiment of countless marriage supporters--marriage supporters who are not telling anyone how to live his or her life, but know that no one has the right to redefine marriage for all of us.
Franklin Graham, son of world-famous televangelist Billy Graham, recently said that “true followers” of Jesus “cannot endorse same-sex marriage."
They will bring the special message that marriage between one man and one woman is a unique social good that the government should protect and preserve to our nation's capital. All Americans have the right to live as they choose but no one has the right to redefine marriage.
