Breaking News: Boy Scouts Delay Vote Until May in Wake of Backlash Over Proposed Changes

Thank you to everyone who took action to encourage the Boy Scouts of America to stand by their founding principles! This was seemingly a done deal until a few days ago when you mobilized:

The Boy Scouts of America has decided to delay its vote on a proposal to let local troops decide whether to allow openly gay members and leaders.

The organization, whose leaders had been expected to vote on the proposal Wednesday, said it needs more time to get input from its members. The vote will now be held in May.

"After careful consideration and extensive dialogue within the Scouting family, along with comments from those outside the organization, the volunteer officers of the Boy Scouts of America’s National Executive Board concluded that due to the complexity of this issue, the organization needs time for a more deliberate review of its membership policy," the group said Wednesday morning.

"To that end, the executive board directed its committees to further engage representatives of Scouting’s membership and listen to their perspectives and concerns. This will assist the officers’ work on a resolution on membership standards. The approximately 1,400 voting members of the national council will take action on the resolution at the national meeting in May 2013." (CNN)

    Excellent!

    I don't believe the 1,400 voting members of the national council will change the current policy. But, as Rick suggests, keep calling them.

    While we're at it we should also tell Randall Stevenson and James Turley to step down.

    What does banning gays from the Boy Scouts have to do with same-sex marriage exactly? All you're doing here is promoting discrimination against gays by a private group.

    @Jon,

    Those demanding the Boy Scouts turn its back on its founding ideology have linked this change to their push towards marriage corruption.

    It is all part-and-parcel of the same dirty little agenda being pimped by these dirty rotten scoundrels.

    Homosexuals knew the standards of the BSA. They knew the court battles won. But they had to disregard the beliefs and philosophies of others. No respect. No compromise, just keep flaunting their aberrant lifestyle choices.
    Just like marriage; it has always referred to relationships between opposite sex couples. But no! Not good enough for the homosexual community. They just attack and want to wreck anything that is decent and good.

    Re comment nr. 3. There is no direct connection other than the obvious similarity of the tactics and arguments, even though the Scouts are perfectly within their rights according to the SCOTUS.

    In many circumstances, I am open to compromise, but the proposed compromise wouldn't last more than a few months before there would be a new round of well-funded lawsuits and incessant demands at the local level designed to crush local troops.

    This could very easily split the BSA into two organizations or leave it as a much smaller organization, much as the marriage discussion has split churches and led to a mass exodus of members from liberal churches.
