Chicago Mayor Emanuel Chooses Gay Marriage Over "Safer Streets"

Last year, one of Mayor Emanuel's top three priorities was "safer streets". A year later, homicides are up 38% in Chicago, and instead of "safe streets" the Mayor's new priority is gay marriage:

Mayor Rahm Emanuel Tuesday ranked legalizing gay marriage as his No. 3 legislative priority in Springfield — behind pension reform and a Chicago casino — and said he plans to get “very involved” in passing a gay marriage bill.

... Asked how involved he was willing to get in the fight for gay marriage, Emanuel said he planned to be “very involved.” That apparently means putting his notorious powers of persuasion to work on reluctant Chicago lawmakers. “While Illinois led the way nationwide with civil unions, it is time now that we take the next step, which I said when we had a ceremony in Millennium Park. This is the first step toward marriage equality, and I hope that we will take that step and I will lead an effort,” he said. -- Chicago Sun-Times

Well, of course gay marriage is a higher priority than safer streets, because that's where all the money is.

    Politicians are such whores!

Emanuel's "solution" to gang violence was to tell the gangs to "take it to the alleyways." Now there's some leadership for 'ya. Dealing with crime is just so hard. Much easier and more profitable to pander to pseudo-marriage advocates.

Emanuel and everyone else associated with Pres. Osama are all cut from the same soiled cloth.

What do you expect from a ballet dancer and member of "Man's Country" gay bathhouse in Chicago?

I hate to say it, but what he is not saying is that a dead citizen in the Chicago street is not as important as legaling false unions.

A live citizen who is against false "marriage" maybe worth a lot less.

Good to see that emotions take precedence over the lives and economic woes of people. At least this democrat admits it. The others true to disguise it.

The state of Illinois is on the bring of financial collapse and people are dying in the streets of Chicago, but clearly the democrats like Emmanuel who run the state know whats "really important.

Of course, politicians can do more than one thing at the same time. Further, states where SSM has been banned tend to have higher murder and assault rates than states where marriage equality exists.

Sometimes I think that Rahm Emanuel is a very evil man. I can't think of anything he has done - or method that he has used - which has led to anything but moral evil.

A mayor can do more than one thing, right?

Why is redefining marriage a higher priority than lowering the murder rate, HV? And how is defining marriage as being between a man and a woman the cause of murders and assaults?

@ HIV, your statements about murder rates are completely made up. There's no correlation.

@ Rusty, I'm glad you said it b/c I agree with you. Among other things, the citizens in Chicago, New York, D.C, have all been disarmed, which is a big part of socialist strategy. States that honor the 2nd Amendment have the lowest crime rates.

Let's unite, not divide. Let's keep women and men marrying one another, that way they can share and understand one another better. This is how men and women can be equal and feel sympathy for each other. The other way is NOT equal, one man and one women IS equal

Doesn't NOM choose 'gay marriage over safer streets' in spending so much money fighting it?

The quote is about legislative priorities in Springfield--what Emanuel wants from the state legislature--not overall priorities. And if he puts a casino in Chicago ahead of SSM, he probably doesn't care much about SSM.

    @Alex

Typically, guys who grow up without a father and mother embrace false families like gangs, who then terrorize and murder everyone around them. That's the chief reason for Chicago's murder rate.

Hence, NOM supporting real marriage (one man, one woman) contributes to a stable communities where gangbanging is a rarity instead of the norm. This results in safer streets.
