I am sufficiently libertarian that I pay little or no attention to the private relationships of gays. It is when someone tries to change the underlying basis of family law by redefining and repurposing marriage so that it is de-gendered and totally disconnected with procreation that I become engaged. It is when someone tries to curtain free speech and free enterprise to advance a PC agenda that I become engaged. California has a legal structure where gay families have everything but the word marriage, and that is considered intolerably hateful by the LGBT lobby. This is not a live and let live attitude. Redefining marriage in California isn’t their final goal. Redefining marriage in the whole U.S. isn’t their final goal. The final goal is crushing anyone who doesn’t endorse the LGBT agenda. I actually favor liberal hospitalization rights and the ability to write your own will to determine who gets your property. Many states have employment protections. I have no problem with that. I would like to see employment protections for free speech rights.

As for Social Security, singles don’t get to designate someone to receive their Social Security benefits. The only way we could make it equal for singles (who presumably have rights, too!) would be to make it a private pension with designated beneficiaries.

That ruling was from the 1st Circuit and that District Judge based her opinion on the recent 1st Circuit Appellate opinion that chose to ignore SCOTUS guidance in favor of their belief that the current SCOTUS might choose to reverse Baker v. Nelson; not going to happen.

Austin, the problem with your statement and notion as well as others like you, you remain under the delusion that you are like "straight people" ( as a homosexualist ), not to say you can't be but choose not to. What is different and separate can never be equal; different forms of unions are not meant to be treated the same. Would you treat your relationship with a family member the same way you treat your friends, or your mate? Of course you would not... The fact of the matter, SSM is the opposite of marriage between a man and woman, in principle and cultivation. M/F marriage serves as a good to all societies in the world and should be treated with that respect, while SSM does not.

Today, Judge Vanessa Bryant, a George W. Bush appointee to the District Court of Connecticut, struck down Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act as unconstitutional today in Pedersen v. Office of Personnel Management, a case brought by Gay and Lesbian Advocates and Defenders (GLAD) in November 2010. In her ruling, Judge Bryant writes,
“Having considered the purported rational bases proffered by both BLAG and Congress and concluded that such objectives bear no rational relationship to Section 3 of DOMA as a legislative scheme, the Court finds that no conceivable rational basis exists for the provision [DOMA]. The provision therefore violates the equal protection principles incorporated in the Fifth Amendment to the United States Constitution.”

Chick Fil A can sell as many sandwiches as they want, but DOMA will soon be defeated in court.
