NOM Chairman Maggie Gallagher debated Andrew Sullivan at Georgetown University Wednesday night, in an event facilitated by a new group called Catholics for Equality and moderated by E.J. Dionne.
The day of the event Archbishop Wuerl's spokesman released a statement saying Catholics for Equality is not a Catholic group. Listening to Andrew Sullivan, you could see why.

What, exactly, did Sullivan get wrong?
The Church has bent over backwards to help homosexuals who have contracted HIV/AIDS, and the homosexuals complain because they feel it is not doing enough; that it must condone the irresponsible behavior that led to the disease.
Homosexuals have taken the stance that the church is aggressive, indeed violent against homosexuals, whereas throughout its 2000 year history, the church has expressed only compassion for those individuals whose lifestyle leads to disease and emptiness.
Yet another institution sought to be redefined, and thereby destroyed, by homosexuals. How many men would have avoided a slow and grisly death by AIDS if they had rejected their homosexual inclinations as the church teaches? How many more could be saved?
Uh, straight people get AIDS too.
Uh, read the stats, man. In the US, HIV remains a disease overwhemingly confined to men having sex with men.

Yes, men having sex with men are spreading it to women in Africa, and that is taking place here, as well, but make no mistake: the epidemic that this disease has become is predominately a result of homosexual sex.
Mr. Sullivan seeks to paint all homosexuals as martyrs in a cause. He says:
"...we should not be surprised that violence is waged against homosexuals given their desire to change society to conform to what they believe..."
Mr. Sullivan then peers into his crystal ball predicting this:
"...one of the consequences – unfortunate consequences nonetheless of the push for gay equality will be violence against gay people..."
Let's cut through the hype and propaganda here, folks. Mr. Sullivan offers no evidence that homosexuals have been victimized BECAUSE of their desire to change society to conform to what they believe. There are no martyrs here.
Secondly, Mr. Sullivan does not speak for ALL homosexuals.
Lastly, does Mr. Sullivan claim to know what ALL homosexuals believe? Is he, like God, all knowing?
Mr. Sullivan does homosexuals the disservice of speaking of them as monolithic rather than as a group of individuals each with their own, individual, thoughts, feelings and beliefs. This is the same sort of dehumanizing abuse which was heaped upon African-Americans, speaking monolithically of "blacks" and assuming that African-Americans share a single group conciousness. Mr. Sullivan's approach is demeaning in the extreme.
Mr. Sullivan predicts, without any factual data to back it up, that homosexuals will, in the future, suffer violence and that such violence will be the direct result of the push for "equality". Since Mr. Sullivan claims to know the future, those of you who have investments in the market might wish to consult with him.
Now we know why the SPLC lied, stating that gays remain the minority most targeted by hate crimes. Can you see the coordinated effort here to make a false case?
Even the Communist Party USA addressed hate crimes and the standing of homosexuals in hate crime statistics back in 2005 when it said:
"Whereas, hate crime based on sexual orientation is now the second-highest category of hate crimes in the United States, and hate crimes against LGBT people are increasing..."

Gee, do you think that there's a coordinated conspiracy here? Do you think that it is a conspiracy "theory" in light of the very real, concrete and explicit statements made by Mr. Sullivan, the SPLC and the Communist Party USA?
In a previous blog, Maggie made the distinction between seeking very specific marriage benefits and seeking some sort of vauge "equality". The former may be resolved in a non-destructive manner while the latter is inherently destructive to marriage, family and religious freedom. You will notice that Mr. Sullivan speaks specifically of "equaltiy" and NOT about marriage benefits.
Mr. Sullivan is not alone. The Communist Party USA also speaks of "equality" rather than about marriage benefits as well!
"Be it further resolved that the Communist Party step up its efforts to work for full equality for LGBT people; and,"
"Be it further resolved to establish a National Commission of the Party on the fight for LGBT rights and equality."

Isn't that something? We find all of these various groups supporting not marriage benefits for homosexuals but "equality'! Amazing! Amazing that the "cause" being pushed is the one which is destructive to America and her institutions!
Let us, yet once again, set the record straight. Here are the FBI statistics for single bias hate crimes:

An analysis of the 6,598 single-bias incidents reported in 2009 showed the following:
■48.5 percent were motivated by racial bias.
■19.7 percent resulted from religious bias.
■18.5 percent were linked to sexual-orientation bias.
■11.8 percent stemmed from ethnicity/national origin bias.
■1.5 percent involved disability bias."

Notice that homosexual "equality" activists show no interest in addressing the larger issue of hate crimes per se. They are only interested in hate crimes against homosexuals. This sort of narrowly focused, self-centered thinking is characteristic of those who lack a larger social conciousness and reflects the kind of society, or lack therof, which we wil have if homosexual "equality" activists have their way.
I don't really want to get too deep into this HIV discussion, but I do want to point out that Mike is incorrect: men who have sex with men are NOT what is spreading the disease in Africa (to women or anyone else). There is no data to suggest that is fact. In addition, the PDF that Mike highlights from the CDC is a specific fact sheet about MSM...but it is taken extremely out of context---similar fact sheets exist for all the other impacted communities such as women, youth, and communities of color---and more significantly, I think that if a representative from the CDC were to see the way in which their document is being utilized in the comments here, they would be among the first to refute the claim that "this disease is predominantly a result of homosexual sex."
It is not a viral infection or an illness which is threatening America, no matter which poor soul is unfortuante enough to suffer it. It is the pursuit of an agenda, homosexual "equality", which, by it's very nature, carries with it the seeds of destruction of marriage, family and religious freedom which is the threat. The methods being used in the attempt to bring about homosexual "equality" are right now sawing away at the foundations of our representative democracy.
Let us pray for the physical healing of all afflicted persons for God's infinite mercy encompasses all his children. At the same time, let us not be blind to the real and present danger to The United States of America, the bastion of freedom which God has willed into existence.
Don - I'm not here to attack homosexuals; I think it's sad that so many of them have died and continue to suffer from a disease that is almost completely preventable, but for their irresponsible acts.
My only point was to point out the irony of their attacks on Catholicism, when all Catholicism ever did to them was try and convince them to avoid behaviors that would cause them to get sick, and to provide assistance to those who did and continue to get sick. It's as if they're angry with the Catholic church for being right.

Oh, I understand completely, Mike, and I don't think that you are attacking homosexuals. Your point is, in fact, well taken.
The question is, since the Church has tried to be helpful, how is it that it is being attacked by homosexual "equality" activists? The answer is simple. Those behind homosexual "equality" activism don't care at all about homosexuals or what is really in their best interests. They are simply using homosexual "equality" as a vehicle to attack The United States and it's most fundamental institutions.
Once we understand that this entire homosexual "equality" business is really nothing but cover for an attack on America, then everything falls into place and makes sense. Try looking at it from that perspective, Mike, and see if the apparent contradictions disappear.
