Most people in Scotland want marriage to stay between a man and a woman, latest polling shows.
A majority (55 per cent) agree that “marriage should continue to be defined as a life-long exclusive commitment between a man and a woman”. Only 38 per cent disagree.
And half of all Scots want the matter to be decided by referendum, only 39 per cent want to leave it to MSPs. Support for a referendum is even higher amongst young people.

The civil rights of minority groups are not supposed to be a popularity contest.
Great to hear that Scots support true marriage. Let them vote. Redefining marriage is a crime against children, and against humanity.
Does NOM have an opinion/position on legal recognition of same sex domestic partnerships in Scotland compared with same sex marriage?
If a "minority" is defined by maladaptive and irresponsible behavior, that does not mean society must legally sanction the maladaptive and irresponsible behavior.
@RC
I don't know about NOM.
But “same sex domestic partnerships” is not a name (nor is “civil union”).
Marriage is a specific and unique word that names something original: the man-woman committed union.
The “same sex domestic partnerships” have to invent a word to name their “same sex domestic partnerships”. And then we can start to talk about them.
Until that time, they will forever be flirting around the word “marriage” for lack of identity. And so continually threatening the name given to the “opposite sex domestic partnership”: marriage. And so threatening the simple awareness of the originality of that union.
Stop threatening us. Find your own word.
(And stop the marketing of babies to same sex couples.)
There's one opinion, which carries the legal weight of... an opinion.
@Jeanette
Everything is decided by majority rule. Court rulings, amendments, referendums, laws, everything.

The SCOTUS decision in Bakke says that groups have no Rights, that only individuals, as persons, do.
So, the law that defines "marriage" as the union of a man and a woman already addresses the "Rights" of all those who are either a man, or a woman. The heterosexuality of the man and/or the woman is not required. They may claim to be homo, or Republican, or Muslim, for all the law cares.
Zack..in the early 60's, 67% of Californians voted in a proposition to preserve and protect racial discrimination in housing. Since "everything is decided by majority rule", should that not have been struck down by the Supreme Court?
