Doubling-down:
The Australian arm of the Seattle-based coffee giant Starbucks on Tuesday endorsed gay marriage.
“Core to who we are and what we value as a company is our belief in equal treatment of our partners [employees] and our customers,” the company said in a statement.
“It is with this in mind that Starbucks Australia would like to publicly announce our proud support of marriage equality for all.”
“Many of our stores and partners are actively participating in events and activities aimed at changing local legislation – together we can make a difference.”
The endorsement comes after gay marriage opponent the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) launched a boycott against Starbucks over its support for a gay marriage law in Washington state. As of Wednesday, 44,329 people had pledged at the group's boycott site to “dump Starbucks.” -- OnTopMag
If you live in Australia or have friends who do -- now is the time to take the pledge at www.DumpStarbucks.com!

Hey, we finally moved on to Peet's coffee, a great substitute for Starbucks. We're also trying some other cheaper brands that are good, as well, though their names escape me.
I managed the switch (my wife thinks so-called SS"M" is ok) by complaining about the price of Starbucks. New coffees at home, and the kids are making their own frozen coffee drinks in the blender. Thanks Starbucks for saving me some cash, opening my wife up to some new coffee options, and teaching my kids to use the blender and bypass the middleman!
GO NOM!
Keep working those petitions, I see the day when Starbucks will collapse... Startbucks will be history on the path they are on... I am a believer that no business is too big to fail.
@leo
The only time Starbucks will collapse is Nuclear War. If you think a tiny minority of the population boycotting it because of what it stands for will sink one of the largest companies in the world, you're sadly mistaken.
NOM,
Can I make a suggetion, I'll let you in on a little secret. experiment with stimulating colors for future WP layouts. Without giving to much info away, why do you think McDonald's uses bright colors and specific colors for their brand, (trademark), for over 50 yrs? I will let you fill in the blanks in my post!
The power of colors is a natural phenomena.
James - Starbucks collapsed only a few years ago; when the economy is poor, many other things take precedence over coffee. A boycott could be the difference between success and disaster.
James, in case you have not notice, the Starbuck boycott has gone International, and if you think Starbucks is too big to fail, you're the one who is sadly mistaken.
Stick around and watch how the power of the business consumers operates....
And, personally I think their coffee sucks, and can't understand how any body would pay for their high price crap!
Psst Leo, you've just revealed why this boycott will fail, most of the folks "participating" in it are like you - they never went to Starbucks in the first place.
Australia is a very unreligious country and apparently the parliamentary inquiry shows that 64% support gay "marriage". However, they also have an increasingly large Muslim population, growing due to immigration so perhaps that will change soon...
Time for a Starbucks boycott in Australia.
JC,
So I take it you don’t like Starbucks coffee either..?
I don't know if most of the people participating in the boycott are non-Starbucks consumers because I am not privy to that information and neither are you.
But, you are giving Starbuck way too much credit to think that people need their brand of products. There plenty of better coffee roasters out there…
I can say the same thing for the opposition, those Starbucks support numbers they keep boasting about, most of them are probably duplicates from the same person, or just numbers added to the petition. This is the type of stuff your side is more likely do… In fact the whole LGBT movement is a lie so falsehood comes with the territory.
' proud support of marriage equality for all.”
So they support polygamy? If not, it's not equality for all.
Hey Brian,
Can we get a list of all the companies that we might contact or boycott for not staying neutral in the culture wars? Maybe a strong campaign for boycotting will discourage other companies from making these moves. I'm not shopping at these stores or for these products:
Starbucks
Home Depot
General Mills
Target
JC Penney
Thanks, leehawk, I will share that information on my Facebook acct. I use to shop at Target, not any more...
Good post, leehawks.
Btw, everyone for defending marriage, please support Exxon/Mobile. I understand that their shareholders just voted down a proposed change to include sexual orientation in their employment policies. Perhaps NOM can run an article on this good news because it's unlikely the Lamestream Media will.
Fueling up at a Mobile station may cost me a few cents more per gallon, but I don't mind paying a little more knowing the profits won't be going to promote that which is conflict with my values.
@leo...
Sure, there are better coffee shops out there, and many don't choose Starbucks. Millions upon millions do though, and for that reason, I doubt they even feel threatened by this campaign. They're the stand-out market leader. As another poster said, the type of people who oppose-SSM aren't exactly Starbucks' target market anyway. The reason the company can so comfortably support SSM is because their customers are, generally, the kind of people who would agree.
Plus, accusing the opposition of "faking" their petition with absolutely no evidence to back up such a claim aside from your own paranoia is petty, to be frank.
So glad I won't be seeing any of you at Target!
Leehawks, better add Microsoft, Apple, Google, Amazon and Nike to your list. I can send more if you'd like.
Stefan, please do so, send us a least of names of those companies you are aware of that support the marriage corruption movement.
Also, it won't be difficult for people to boycott Microsoft, Apple, Google, Amazon, Nike, I've been doing it for the past ten years without any problem.
Hey JamesF,
In regards to the likelihood that your kind would stage a false petition in support for Starbucks, the characteristic is fitting based on the whole gay ideology, and the falsehood of SSM. If a platform of an idea is build on untruths, so will everything that springs from it...
Yes, Stephan, I too would appreciate regular updates on any companies you hear of who are using customer funds to oppose the preservation of marriage.
Any other marriage corruption advocates out there, this information is always welcome here.
You guys have a very sensitive ear to the ground on these matters, and it is very helpful for us to hear about all your corporate successes.
@ 19, I meant to say "list"...
Rick,a good start is boycotting companies that get top scores on the "Corporate Equality Index" of the infamous "Human Rights Campaign".
LEO said: "Also, it won't be difficult for people to boycott Microsoft, Apple, Google, Amazon, Nike, I've been doing it for the past ten years without any problem."
It's more difficult than you think. Microsoft owns IIS, which is the third most popular server software in the world. Do you have any idea how much of the internet depends on IIS? Hint: a lot. Chances are that you've indirectly used it without even realizing it.
Then there's phones. In addition to owning YouTube, Google owns the Android phone operating system. You could always use Apple phones, of course...except Apple supports SSM too.
Here's some more companies that support SSM:
Dell, IBM, 3M, AT&T, Automatic Data Processing, Best Buy, Cisco, eBay, HP, Office Depot, Oracle, Sprint Nextel, Symantec, Tech Data, Xerox, Yahoo, Acer, Adope, AMD, Comcast, Cox Communications, EarthLink, Intel, Lexmark, McAfee, Motorola, Seagate, Sony, Texas Instruments, Time Warner, Verizon, and T-Mobile.
How can you even use a computer, or the internet, or a phone, without using the products of any of these companies? You'll notice that both Intel and AMD are on this list. What kind of processor do you have?
Robert,
I know you are probably an honest guy/girl, but could you provide us with a link that outlines those companies you listed in you last post, support SSM? That way we know your not just telling stories. Deal! You know, tell us the source of your information so that we here can confirm it by contacting those companies. Always a good thing to get it from the horse mouth so to speak...
Thanks!
@ 23, corrections:... you're...horse's...
And, Robert, if what you say is true in your last post, I know you might be shocked, but I don't use any of those brands at the moment, or at least not indirectly. For example, I use to have Verizon as my cel phone provider, I stop using them back in 2000 for other reason and I have never gone back; I obviously use Microsoft software but I have never ever directly paid for their products or services. We'll knock them down one by one if that is the only method available. But hey, boycotting 9 out of 10 companies isn't bad is it...? Back at you!
Still, I have a hunch you lack sincerity about those companies you mention, of course unless you can prove otherwise?
Just so you and I are clear, I could not trust an LGBT supporter if my life depended on it, that's how bad things are right now for your side...
LEO,
The companies listed are from HRC's "Corporate Equality Index" report (2012). You can find it here: http://www.hrc.org/resources/entry/corporate-equality-index-2011
And yes, I am quite shocked that you don't use any of these brands. if you're not using Intel, AMD, or Apple products, what kind of computer do you have? I'm also willing to bet that your ISP uses Cisco routers. If you're paying for internet service, then part of that money goes into the company's coffers - money they use to buy Cisco routers for their infrastructure. An analogy for this would be a school using part of its students tuition money to fund a vending machine that sells bottled Starbucks drinks for the students.
OK , may be I should clarify, how many of those companies are attempting change the definition of marriage, and are on the front lines like Starbucks. Companies giving benefits to gay people is not a big priority I this time. As long as I don't knowingly pay to a company who is actively participating in the culture war, then I'm doing just fine. If I am getting those companies' goods and services for free like Microsoft products and service, I am still accomplishing my goal...
Robert, get out into the real world and learn something, people don't really need those companies' products, they "want" them for psychological purposes, and I'm too wise for you so move along. I could tell you things that would blow your mind, figuratively.
@LEO I would never trust any NOM supporter as they all want to hang me.
LEO,
There's no reason to insult me. I could have come here talking about "blah blah you guys are stupid bigots blah blah" - but I didn't. Instead I'm trying to make a point. If that point is in error, that's fine, you can point that out. But telling me to "get out into the real world and learn something" and "I'm too wise for you so move along" just reflects badly on you.

The irony here in Australia is, we have two Coffee chains.
One is against SSM, and the other is for SSM.
