Steve Rothaus at a Miami Herald blog:
Washington, D.C. – Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid [D-NV] issued the following statement today following President Obama’s announcement of support for marriage equality.
“My personal belief is that marriage is between a man and a woman. But in a civil society, I believe that people should be able to marry whomever they want, and it’s no business of mine if two men or two women want to get married. The idea that allowing two loving, committed people to marry would have any impact on my life, or on my family’s life, always struck me as absurd.“In talking with my children and grandchildren, it has become clear to me they take marriage equality as a given. I have no doubt that their view will carry the future.

Why, Harry, that's wonderful of you to share.
Now how about defending the will of the people on this natter, you solipsistic dolt?
>>The idea that allowing two loving, committed people to marry would have any impact on my life, or on my family’s life, always struck me as absurd.“
Yet another elected leader totally out of touch with the ramifications of ssm. Mr. Reid, there's an all-out assault being waged upon religious liberty, freedom of speech, parental rights, and on it goes - within the country you were elected to help lead. Wake up and smell the coffee (any brand but Starbucks, of course)!

Biden admits his views came to be changed by watching "Will & Grace". Sounds like Mr. Reid's household may have spent too much time in front of the boob tube watching "Modern Family". Take it from these leaders folks - watching shows that twist the natural order of things will warp your mind into desensitization, eventual acceptance, and eventual promotion of it. Don't let it happen to you and yours.
Please elaborate, how should Harry Reid "defend the will of the people"?
I get a kick out you folks. When a far right right religious conservative takes an extreme position rejected by the overwhelming majority (think Santorum and contraception), you regard it as some sort of principled stand. When a Democrat takes a position consistent with more than half of the country and the overwhelming majority of voters in his own party, he's somehow ignoring the will of the people. Too much.
You see, B73, you have a big problem on your hands.
The people of the United States have made it inescapably clear (it is so clear that no amount of media brainwashing can muddy the crystal clarity of this determination) that they *do not* accept the redefinition of humanity's oldest and most vital institution.
So you now fight on two fronts, both of which are political losers:
1. You fight on the marriage corruption front, which the people have rejected.
2. You fight on the front of contemptuous disregard for the democratically expressed decision of the people.
Rotsa ruck.
You know, in my nightmares sometimes, I dream of what would have happened if the marriage corruption movement had waited for its fascist media brainwashing program to ripen just five or six more years, before abandoning the Trojan Horse of civil unions.......
Thank God they just couldn't quite maintain the facade long enough.
It's Harry Reid. This man compared those who opposed Obamacare to southern slave owners.
He's a political hack with no inlfuence. Uncle Reid needs to retire so he can take a nap.
You know liberals like B73 are out of touch with reality when they think 20% or so of the population(that's how many people identify as liberal) are centrists.
What's clear is that most Americans support equal legal rights for gays and lesbians. Mr. Reid is quite right: the marriage of strangers has no impact on him. I applaud him and President Obama for helping to bring America into the 21st century, despite a bunch of GOP idiots who want to go in the other direction!

Nice...this shows how on the ball you are...
You can always count on radicals to overplay their hand...there were a million better ways to massage this in...
Even Obama & Reids switch is disaterous this close to an election..
God lays waste the better laid plans of mice & men..
Should be interesting...could not have been a better lay of the land for the SCOTUS battle.

See that's just it, Zack. It doesn't matter what percentage of people label themselves "liberal" because even people who don't support equality. We know that over half the country supports marriage for gays and lesbians. Heck, over half of American Catholics do. Do you think they identify as liberal? It's NOM that's out of touch with reality. They think they speak for the roughly half of the country that doesn't support marriage equality... yet. But a large percentage of them support civil unions and other gay rights and they reject the notion that an anti-gay group like this represents them. It's only a tiny segment of that 50% who share NOM's extreme anti-gay views.
...and that 48% or so percent that isn't there on marriage equality? They're evolving just like your President did. And they're leaving you and NOM in the dust!
For years Democrats have been having it both ways. They've had a long history of racism (Robert Byrd, Al Gore Sr and Jr, Bull Connor), yet they claim to be the party of civil rights. They've privately treated women abysmally (The Kennedys, Bill Clinton, John Edwards), but claim to be the party of women's rights. And they've gone on the campaign trail saying they do not support gay marriage while they've claimed to be the gay-friendly party. Joe Biden voted for DOMA. He forced the President to end the party's Kabuki dance and show their hand!
I'd bet a dollar Brian Brown is out there trying to get these loser Republican "play it safe" dolts top awake up and recognize that Obama just handed them the election.
Americans don;t like having their votes disrespected by gay cash finance bundlers and pathetic media brainwashing shills.
I could add "pollsters", but after NC nobody will ever believe them on this issue again.
WAKE UP MITT!
I feel so sorry for him.
BACKLASH!

Cool.
Even Mitt will get the message now.
@Rick
I'd say those numbers reflect the poor economy. Not enough time has passed for Obama's sudden endorsement to take effect.
So I would assume, that even though I'm sure a small number of that probably does reflect his position change, Im pretty sure it has to do with the economy.
SSMers are stuck on stupid and now Obama has decided to join them in the quicksand.
Maybe he should have just remained glib, as he did regarding abortion, and admit that he thinks the issue is above his pay grade.
Then we can demote him to a job more appropriate to his pay grade.
