Opponents of Maryland’s same-sex marriage law said Wednesday they have collected more than half the signatures necessary to force a November referendum.
The Maryland Marriage Alliance says it has collected more than 30,000 signatures from voters hoping to overturn the law, which was passed in February by the General Assembly and signed by Democratic Gov. Martin O'Malley.
Petitioners have until June 30 to collect 55,736 valid voter signatures, which must be validated by the state Board of Elections. They must submit one-third of those signatures — or 18,579 of them — by May 31.
...No state has ever upheld gay marriage in a referendum, but more than 30 states have rejected it.

The people of Maryland need to teach their government a lesson.
Wonderful news...keep up the excellent work!
Yay!
We have some motivated folks collecting signatures. I've heard of one marriage supporter who vowed to collect 1,000 signatures on her own.
Nothing like a real good ground game
Great News!

Soon to be 31 next week when the people of the great state of NC get their say. Maryland's repeal by the will of the people will be 32. More repeals coming. California will be yet another state after the SCOTUS sees the momentum building by the American people seeking to protect marriage. More states to follow as an increasing number of Americans realize the precious, hard-won fundamental rights and liberties that are being eroded - and will be ultimately lost - if they don't take a firm stand now.
Dan:
California already crushed marriage corruption, in the Prop 8 campaign.
Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid and recognized in the State of California.
We won it.
Trust me, no black robed social engineer arrogant tyrant is going to take it away from us either
Wait til the SCOTUS gets a chance to weigh in on the disgraceful judicial sham perpetrated by the ignoble Vaughan Walker.
You can see it coming- even the marriage corruption conspirators are desperately trying to keep the Prop 8 case away from SCOTUS now.
I think it's inevitable that gays and lesbians get the same legal rights, including the right to marry, that straight people get. The courts and legislatures seem to understand this, and a majority of people support some form of legal union for gay couples.
Robert:
The inevitability argument is all that the marriage corruption advocates have left.
It isn't going to be look particularly serviceable after next Tuesday.
Not that it has looked particularly serviceable at all, given the fact that the American people seem to consider the inevitability to reside with the opposite position
Perhaps your argument is, more accurately:
It is inevitable that a small group of ideological fanatics in black robes will impose their worldview over and against the will of the people.
Good luck selling that one.
Such a viewpoint, I predict, would lost even thirty two consecutive elections
It will also lose drastically at SCOTUS.
One might even say it were an historical inevitability..,.
you lost in Washington state when everything but marriage was put to a vote.
@Rick #9:
Priceless- the single most hilarious marriage corruption quote of the year.
Congratulations!
Rick #10. Thanks. You''ll eventually lose in a lot more states and I'll still be around to see it.
The vast majority of people 40 and under support marriage. In poll after poll, support for equality has risen sharply, while those that still favor discrimination get fewer. The anti-equality crowd used every trick in the book to try to win a huge victory in NC, now that people realize how bad the amendment really is, support against it has grown. Now amendment supporters have been reduced to using scare tactic and lies to convince voters to still support it. In a few year, we will start to see ballot initiatives that will call on the repeals of these discriminatory amendments. Once all Americans finally have equality when it comes to marriage or civil unions, then maybe NOM can finally focus on REALLY protecting marriage; preventing divorce, spousal abuse and adultery, the real threats to marriage. And stop scapegoating the gays for all your problems
I believe the Holy Bible Civil Unions Yes Marriage No. Period. I am a Catholic.
