"The Government will be obliged to permit same-sex marriage on religious premises on exactly the same basis as it permits heterosexual marriage,"
There is a big difference between 'obliged to permit' and 'permitted to compel'. Mr. Addison knows this. He is correct that the government would be obliged to permit same-sex marriage on the same basis as it permits heterosexual marriage. So let's look at what that means. Heterosexual couples of all faiths and faith combinations, as well as couples where one or both of the parties is divorced, have the legal right to marry. Religious institutions are permitted by, but not required by the government to solemnize any of those marriages it chooses. When same-sex couples can marry, government will have no more authority to force the Catholic Church to solemnize the union of a man and a man than it has to force them to unite a divorced Jewish man to a Hindu woman today. Addison is a lawyer and he knows this. To intentionally misrepresent the facts in a "legal opinion" as he does here is shameful and violates the basic principles of his profession. He should be ashamed. His claim is merely an attempt to create the fiction that religious institutions that oppose marriage equality have a horse in this race. They do not. He wants to instill fear in the general public with his "gays are coming after you" brand of propaganda. Anyone who can look at the situation logically can see that he's full of it.

Here's that pesky thing called "human rights" again. If a gay Brit pays civil taxes and a Brit Church operates by virtue of those civil taxes well, yup, the Church better conform to the obligations of equal services for civil marriages that all Brits must attain no matter if it's in a Church or not.. Civil rights are human rights.

Or, give up the the civil tax support.
