Washington Catholic Bishops Pledge to Join R-74 Signature Gathering Effort

SeattlePI:

The two bishops of the Catholic Archdiocese of Seattle, in a letter to the faithful, say they will deploy parishes to collect signatures for Referendum 74, a measure for the November ballot designed to roll back same-sex marriage in Washington.

While asking that signatures not be collected on Easter Sunday, the bishops described the issue as “critically important” and said information on the signature drive is being sent to pastors throughout the Western Washington diocese.

... “Treating different things differently is not unjust discrimination,” the bishops claim. “Marriage can only be between a man and a woman because of its unique ends, purpose and place in society. The word ‘marriage’ isn’t simply a label that can be attached to different types of relationships.

“Instead ‘marriage’ reflects a deep reality — the reality of the unique, fruitful, lifelong union that is only possible between a man and a woman. There is nothing else like it, and it can’t be defined or made into something that it isn’t.”

Yes! The bishops get it and have explained it beautifully.

Male and female are different! Male-female couples are different from same-sex couples! So clear to even young children, and yet the radical Leftists and their coffers of money and lawyers force the explanation of the obvious.

This is all I have said in the start of it all....All clergy need to come together as one...set aside the different methods of practice as we all worship one GOD.

"While asking that signatures not be collected on Easter Sunday,"

Seems the Bishops themselves are aware of the shameful way in which they are desecrating their sanctuaries by turning them into political action centers for anti-gay activists. Otherwise, why not collect signatures on Easter Sunday? Is that not the day when the pews are at their fullest?

Here's that old trope about justifying unequal treatment, via the bishops:

Treating different things differently is not unjust discrimination ...

... except that it is, until you establish that the difference observed is a valid basis for offering unequal protection under the law. I mean, THINK ABOUT IT people! Shall we deny people rights based on their height, and justify it by pointing out that tall & short people are different after all? Or maybe we can give preferential rights and privileges to blue-eyed-blonds, who are certainly "different" in appearance from brown-eyed brunettes. And certainly anyone knows that men are different from women, so I supposed by bishop's logic that justifies unequal rights based on gender? Honestly.

And the bishops follow that up with this golden nugget:

Instead ‘marriage’ reflects a deep reality — the reality of the unique, fruitful, lifelong union that is only possible between a man and a woman. There is nothing else like it ...

... unless you consider the OTHER deep reality, that same-sex unions are very much like opposite-sex unions, in all regards, up to and including their potential for 'fruitfulness'. (same-sex couples having reproductive potential substantially similar to any other infertile couple).

Their assertion that same-sex couples serve an end or purpose that is vastly different from opposite-sex couples reflects either an ignorance or a conceit. But it does not reflect reality. Same-sex couples are just as capable as opposite sex couples: of making lifelong commitments; of supporting their churches and communities; and of raising children.

Daniel, those in opposite-sex relationships should stay in them, those in same-sex relationships should abandon them.
Opposite-sex commitment is to being sworn in as a police officer as
same-sex commitment is to taking the oath as a "made man" in the Mob.
Rewarding relationships for their socially critical characteristic of being opposite-sex is the only justification for marriage existing!

The FRC disagrees ... they cite 162 reasons to marry.
