Maggie's Latest Column: Why is Gay Marriage an Issue in this Campaign?

NOM co-founder Maggie Gallagher's latest syndicated column:

In an appearance on Al Jazeera, I was asked: Why is gay marriage emerging as a big issue in the campaign?

Obviously economic issues dominate this year, as they do every bad economic year. But thanks to President Obama, the culture war is heating up as well.

For the first time, voters will be offered a clear contrast between a Democrat who supports what the courts are doing to marriage and a Republican who opposes it.

But the biggest reason gay marriage is emerging as an issue is because the federal courts are now pushing the culture wars, and Obama is cooperating with them:

Two judges of the most liberal court in America -- the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals -- just took away 7 million Californians' right to vote for marriage.

For those of us who fought hard to give voters this right, by helping put Proposition 8 on the ballot, this 2-1 divided opinion not only takes away their rights, but insults the good name of millions of decent, hardworking, law-abiding Americans. -- Human Events

What is meant by the "right to vote for marriage"? We all have a right to marry.

Nobody has the right to vote on anyone else's marriage.

    Values? Give me a break.
"but insults the good name of millions of decent, hardworking, law-abiding Americans". As a straight married male, that last sentance, if not the entire paragraph is ridiculously offensive.
"Two judges of the most liberal court in America -- the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals -- just took away 7 million Californians' right to vote for marriage" blah, ,blah, blah. Like a broken record. Over and over and over.

Don't worry Stefan, after a few more years of unbridled indoctrination of our children the vote will shift the other way. Our children will also by than have started learning that they can get sexual pleasure from either a man or a woman. I mean you aren't going to raise your own children to be bigoted and prejudiced toward one or the other are you. Explore young fella. Besides spending more time with his own sex when growing up will afford him many natural opportunities. As for having his own children and family don't worry, there is always the medical and scientific world to help you out; bring your check book, we wouldn't want to leave the bankers out.

Exactly JR. Exactly. We all have a right to vote on our laws and how we will live... AND we all have the right to marry, under those laws.

Poster #8 has all but admitted that the homosexual agenda targets our children and their desire to convert them to their chosen lifestyle against the wishes of parents.

Did you find something in the constitution that wasn't there JR? I'm fairly certain that the founding fathers didn't write sodomy into any of their documents...

Actually, you have right to vote to execute all gays and lesbians if you can get it on the ballot.

    Barb,

Your reading comprehension must be slipping. Did you read Walker's ruling and findings of fact? The ninth circuit must have agreed. Do you seriously think the ninth circuit is wrong? What nomers fail to accept is that their opinion of homosexuals means absolutely nothing. Fact, reason and reality conversely mean everything. The court, through logic and reason, found the prop h8 defense to be nothing but full of the holes you mentioned. Your confidence scotus will deliver a result contrary to that of Walker's is nothing less than maliciously natured hubris.

Hehe the group for anti-equality are slowly losing their footing. Sad but enjoyable to watch as they continue to cling on to their old traditions and struggle to prevent new ones from bettering the world.

Greg, Reinhardt ignored Walker's listed findings. Please correct yourself on that point.

Walker mistakenly clamed a national right for SSM. Reindhart said he did not. Please correct yourself on that point.

When next you discuss the reading comprehension of others, take greater care to read and to comprehend. Please correct yourself on tha point.

Barb, feckless SSMers such as Greg would emphasize homosexulity even as their pro SSM argumentation would not make SSM a sexual type of relationshipunder the law. They desperately want to make the discussion about homosexuality but the issue is marriage. When confronted on the issue of homosexuality the SSMers cry fowl. Don't be baited. The issue is marriage and not what Greg would rather talk about. He may correct himself on this point, too. Patience.

"Do you seriously think the ninth circuit is wrong?"

    Yes. Yes I do.

"What nomers fail to accept is that their opinion of homosexuals means absolutely nothing"

It would be more accurate to state that "Nom-ers," as you so eloquently label us, don't care what your sexual orientation is. We want marriage to continue to be organized according to the integration of the sexes. Your sexual orientation is a non-issue. Making it all about sexual identity misses the boat completely. What you choose to do in your bedroom with someone of the same sex is up to you. We want all citizens to continue to be treated equally under the law, with no regard to your self-declared homosexuality. Marriage between a man and a woman makes no demands for sexual orientation, and we "Nom-ers" want it to stay that way.
