Television and Online Ads Target Iowa Voters with the Message that Paul Is Wrong On Marriage
Des Moines — The National Organization for Marriage (NOM) today launched a series of television and online ads critical of presidential candidate Ron Paul's refusal to fight to preserve traditional marriage. The ads will air during the run-up to the Iowa presidential caucuses on January 3rd.
"Many people think that Ron Paul is a conservative, but when it comes to marriage, he's no conservative – his position is radical and will lead to the destruction of traditional marriage in America," said Brian Brown, NOM's president. "Preserving traditional marriage matters to Iowans and NOM wants Iowa voters to know that Ron Paul is the only major candidate to refuse to pledge to preserve marriage."
Five of the major candidates on the ballot in Iowa have signed NOM's Marriage Pledge, promising to take specific steps to preserve traditional marriage — Rick Santorum, Michele Bachmann, Mitt Romney, Rick Perry and Newt Gingrich. Ron Paul has refused to sign NOM's marriage pledge.
The television ad, found here, informs voters that Ron Paul once said, "sure" when asked if gay marriage should be legal. He opposes a constitutional amendment to restore traditional marriage should federal courts impose gay marriage, as a district judge in San Francisco has already done. And Paul has even gone so far as to say that civil marriage should be abolished altogether.
In addition to a television ad, NOM also launch a series of online advertisements and a new website, www.wrongonmarriage.com highlighting Ron Paul's flawed views on marriage.
"Ron Paul holds positions that many conservatives support, but his position on marriage is far out of the mainstream and is simply unacceptable," Brown said. "Marriage between one man and one woman has been the foundation of American society and American families. It is truly radical for a serious presidential candidate to blithely cast marriage aside, suggesting that any private arrangement between adults can be called marriage. Marriage uniquely serves the common good and America deserves a president who respects that. Quite frankly, Ron Paul is worse on marriage than even Barack Obama."

I would like to thank NOM for coming out against Ron Paul. This I am sure will allow him to continue to rise in the polls and perhaps even win in Iowa. As a married heterosexual man, I have never understood how bigotry is somehow supposed to help my marriage. Or how openness and acceptance is some how supposed to threaten my marriage. Luckily for America, most people with whom I have spoken understand this basic tenant that the lives of other people arte just that.
I did not “choose” to be a heterosexual, any more than a homosexual “chooses” to be so. The only people who “choose” their sexual life style are those who are trying to deny their true being. Thus, if you, the reader of this post “chose” to be “straight”, then you are likely gay but in denial. If you did not have to “choose”, than you should already understand just how wrong it would be for you to be forced to pretend to be something that you are not.
But all of this is irrelevant; whether or not you “chose” your lifestyle, unless and until you accept that you have no right to force your will upon other people, you have no right – EVER – to complain when your rights are violated – PERIOD. There is nothing "conservative" about being a bigot. But again, most Americans understand this, so NOM rallying against Ron Paul will help, not hurt his campaign, and for that, I – and all non bigoted Americans - thank-you.
BTW, the Constitution is a document limiting the power of government. It is not supposed to be used to place limits on the people. Any candidate who has signed a pledge supporting such is woefully unfit to serve in political office. If you wish to be a bigot, liberty (guaranteed by the first Amendment) dictates that you have that right, but turning rule of law on it’s head to deny the rights of people who disagree with you is the worst form of tyranny known to man.
Joe,
standards of conduct are not "bigotry".The reason a government recognizes marriage has to do with how it serves the compelling public interest in promoting the existence of opposite-sex relationships, which does not exist when it comes to same-sex sexual relationships.
It is possible that some people can not help having same-sex sexual attraction, but it is not possible that they have no say in "being gay",in the homosexual sense, because the "gay" identity is based on the false contention that gratifying such attraction can ever be justified. The fact of our species having two sexes determines that it can not.More heterosexual than homosexual persons condone same-sex sex these days, but none,of any sexual orientation, ever should.
There is no place in a "free" society to surpress any certain demographic based on race, religion, or sexual orientation. Nobody cares what your 2000 year old book of fairy tales tells you to do. This is exactly the same as the civil rights the blacks had to fight for in the 20th century, just another group being hate mongered by the same religous people.
In my opinion Ron Paul is 100 percent right, when i hear marriage is between a man and a women, which is the way God intended . The trouble is most marriages end up in divorce. Starting in 1964 with the passage of the Civil Rights Bill of 1964, women were made a minority , and between 1964 to 2010 congress passed over 400 laws to empower women, 0 laws for men. So no matter what a man does , he is wrong. 85 percent of all divorces are brought on by the women. Women now out number men in the workforce. A man must compete with a women to support his family because of AFFIRMATIVE ACTION. The courts have ruin marriage , and passing a Constitution Amendment will not change one thing.
